What compelled you to write ‘The Addict’? Can you tell us a little bit about how the writing of the book unfolded?
I was in a relationship with an addict and found myself incapable of helping him…I made the classic mistakes of adopting the roles of preacher, policewoman, guardian and guard…it was then that I found myself put pen to paper and I began to write my own story as a more effective way to help and propose solutions for recovery from addiction.
Did you have a planned structure for your narrative or did it grow organically?
The narrative was inherently planned as it is my life story…and it is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.
If you had to write ‘The Addict’ again, would you change the way you wrote it?
I wouldn’t change the way I wrote it, but I would prepare myself better for the writing of it…it was an emotional roller coaster ride which rendered me relentlessly ill for the last one year of my documenting the story.
